Bad credit history can affect your relationship with your employer your bank and even your landlord. People with bad credit history are seen in an unfavorable light. This also ruins your credibility with banks and service providers. Here are a few disadvantages of bad credit history.

1. Credit Issuers – Banks, money lenders and credit issuers think twice before issuing money to someone with bad credit history. They think of this as a potential risk. Even if you do receive money from the parties you are usually charged very high interest rate. Some parties will even ask for a security deposit before issuing any money. People with bad credit history are not given credit cards or loans by banks.
2. Employers – A Bad credit history can also affect your career, in today’s fast paced world we need to look for new jobs. 3. Renting a House – No landlord wants to receive his payments late. A bad credit history indicates that you have not been prompt with payments, thus it can be very hard for you rent an apartment. After looking at your bad credit history your landlord is probably going to presume that you will not pay your rent on time. I don’t any landlord would want a tenant who doesn’t pay him his money.
4. Service Providers – Service providers will not provide you with utilities if you have a bad credit history, they will be hesitant to do work for some one who doesn’t pay his bills on time. It often happens that service providers want some kind of security or they may get some one to be a co-signer so they are assured they receive their money. Either way this does not reflect well on you.
5. Home loans or Car loans – With a bad credit history it is not likely that you are going to get a car loan or a home loan. Again over here if you do get the loan you would have to pay very high interest rates.

The Credit ScoreThe Credit Score

Credit is the loaning of money against a promise of payment at a later date. Credit is a general term and can refer to a variety of circumstances. For example, credit could be either consumer or corporate. Consumer credit is money or goods lent to an individual in lieu of payment at a later date. Credit is mostly in the form of loans and mortgages.

Bad credit or adverse credit refers to the credit history of an individual. A credit score is a tool used by banks and other lending institutes to determine the likelihood of repayment of a loan. A credit score is a score derived from all the financial transactions of an individual. A credit score is compiled by three companies I the United States. These are FICO, TransUnion and Equifax. FICO was the first company to start compiling credit history and converting them into scores, which they then sold to banks.

Each company has its own scoring system, but the FICO score is the most widely used score. The FICO credit score ranges from 300 to 850. The dividing line is 620 and the average score of Americans is 650. A score of 690 or above is considered excellent, while a score of 600 and below are considered high risk borrowers. An individual with a bad credit score will find it hard to obtain credit at desirable terms.

By law an individual is entitled to obtain their credit report free of charge from each of the three companies once in a 12 month period. This not the credit score but the information used to compile it. The purpose of the free report is to allow individuals to correct any mistakes in the information. A lot of agencies advertise services to obtain credit reports for a fee. These agencies should be avoided as the first credit report can be obtained for free. The credit score itself needs to be purchased from the company directly. Most credit card agencies offer credit scores to their customers as part of a service. The Wall Street Reform Bill passed on July 22 2010, entitles a customer to receive a free credit score if they are denied a loan or insurance due to their credit rating.

Increasingly, credit scores are being used by organizations such as such as mobile phone companies, insurance companies, employers, landlords, and government departments. Credit scores also vary from country to country. For example, a person with a good credit score in the UK does not automatically guarantee a good credit score in the US.
